5 Tips for a Healthy Automatic Transmission

When you first notice a sign of transmission trouble, you'll want to be proactive about getting to the shop to have a transmission specialist conduct an inspection. If you delay, the problem could soon worsen to the point that you need very expensive repairs, or perhaps a rebuild. At Raptor Transmission, our local mechanics are experts at conducting transmission rebuilds. Don't hesitate to give us a call if you notice any of the following symptoms.

Do I need a transmission rebuild?

If your vehicle won't go into a certain gear, or fails to go into any gear whatsoever, then your transmission may have worn-out gear teeth. With this issue, gears may not properly engage, potentially necessitating a rebuild. And while you're out and about, you'll always want to keep an ear out for strange sounds coming from your vehicle. If you hear grinding noises coming from your transmission, then you've got symptoms of failing bearings and a reverse idler gear problem. Such issues can be addressed as part of a rebuild.

Oftentimes, rebuilds become necessary due to issues related to transmission fluid. By checking your transmission fluid on a monthly basis, you're much more likely to become aware if a transmission problem is brewing. Transmission fluid is generally best checked with the engine on. As transmission fluid cools, it tends to contract. So if you check your transmission fluid while your engine is cold, then you may get a misleading reading on how much fluid you're actually driving with. If your transmission dipstick indicates that your fluid level has gotten really low, then you may have a leak. Transmission fluid leaks should always be addressed ASAP so that major problems don't develop and require a rebuild.

If the transmission fluid has already been leaking for a while, then there's a chance a rebuild will be needed. Common causes of transmission fluid leaks include faulty transmission lines, as well pan gaskets that have become worn-out. Also, if your transmission fluid is emitting an odor like burning plastic, then you'll want to get to the shop so the underlying issues can be identified ASAP. This is a sign that your transmission is overheating. If you delay getting to the shop, then there's a greater risk of the problem worsening to the point that you need a transmission rebuild.
