Keep Your Transmission Healthier by Avoiding these Bad Driving Habits

Keep Your Transmission Healthier by Avoiding these Bad Driving HabitsYour transmission is a highly complex mechanism that consists of many interworking parts. When transmission trouble arises, it can quickly worsen and become very expensive to address. This makes it important to take precautions that'll help to keep your transmission healthy for as long as possible. But if you do notice signs of a transmission issue, you'll want to get to the shop ASAP so the problem can hopefully be nipped in the bud. At Raptor Transmission, we specialize in identifying and fixing transmission problems. At our local transmission shop, we can address any of your vehicle's transmission needs.

Bad Driving Habits that Can Hurt Your Transmission

Regularly slamming on your brakes can cause transmission mounts to become susceptible to major wear and tear. By keeping a safe following distance and always following the speed limit, it's less likely that you'll have to hit your brakes hard. Also, if you never use your parking brake, then your transmission could suffer unnecessary stress, especially if you're parked on a slope.

Regularly punching the accelerator can also put heavy strain on your transmission. After the transmission generates excessive torque, it should be given the opportunity to cool off so that it doesn't become overheated.

Also, transmission problems are more likely to develop if you don't completely stop before you shift into/out of reverse. A simple precaution to preserve your transmission's health is to always fully stop before you shift between reverse and a forward gear.

Another way that transmission trouble is more likely to arise is that you don't ever check your transmission fluid. Transmission fluid should be checked at least once per month so that you're more likely to become aware if your fluid level gets dangerously low or if the fluid is burning.

Skipping transmission maintenance can also increase the risk of transmission problems. Transmission fluid should be flushed at the mileage points indicated in your owner's manual. With the right amount of unpolluted transmission fluid, it's significantly less likely that transmission issues will emerge.
